Those non-ginger hockey players could have had red hair when they were kids, then it changed colour as they got older, but beard hair remained red.  Beard does change colour later to greyish later in life.

Ask me how I know... :/

Chris Johnston is a follicle genetic anomaly.

Soooo many non-ginger hockey players have red beards, Chris has red hair and a dark beard.
