Oh, it's a handheld nuclear detector. Though why a detector contains nuclear material is a bit perplexing.


 smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material, americium-241*, to detect smoke.  So maybe something similar?

* I googled it.  I knew it had something radioactive, but not the actual element. 


 Huh, I did not know that.
