So with the season winding down and US College hockey teams getting eliminated from playoffs, it's time to look towards UDFA signings ("free wallets").
On this year's wishlist:
Drake Caggiula, LW Senior, University of North Dakota (NCHC)
Drake Caggiula plays the left side on North Dakota’s dynamic “CBS” line, which also features freshman Brock Boeser (VAN) and sophomore Nick Schmaltz (CHI). To date, Caggiula has played in 30 games, posting 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists). The Whitby, ON native currently leads the team with six game-winning goals and ranks second nationally with a +33 rating.
The 5’10”, 185-pound Caggiula is all about speed, and what has scouts clamoring to get glimpses of him is his tremendous ability to utilize that speed to create opportunities. Caggiula possesses game-changing speed and accelerates very quickly. He possesses quick feet and transitions exceedingly well, and it is those characteristics that make him difficult to play against.
One area where Caggiula is particularly dangerous is below the dots. He possesses great finishing ability and has a knack for scoring highlight reel goals. Furthermore, he has developed into one of the nation’s best clutch scorers. But, as good as Caggiula is at scoring goals, he is equally good at setting them up. He has great hands and his passing skills are excellent. He also possesses great vision and knows where plays will end up.
So if Murray can sign this guy, maybe the sign this guy we can forget about the Alarm clock deficient Drouin.

Are we allowed to laugh at the fact that Cowen is now saying he asked for a trade earlier in the season? Did he really not realize that to get traded... you have to play well enough that someone actually wants you?
Murray: "you think I haven't tried, hammer head?"
Adds an interesting twist to his comment earlier in the season about not listening to the things that Murray says....

Am I the only one who is surprised that this trade is being referred to as a "blockbuster trade"? We get an overpaid number 3, 4 or 5 d-man and a couple of bags of pucks for a couple of over paid guys who weren't play much and a decent 2nd/3rd line guy. Hardly what I would call a block buster trade.
nowadays, it qualifies, if not on sheer volume of players involved.

I think its awful. Yes, we dump 3 years of bad contracts with greening and cowen, but we take on 5 years of probably the worst contract in the league. Everyone, including media who had NOTHING good to say about phagoof yesterday, is now saying he's a good 3/4 Dman, good enough for any nhl team. i don't believe that for a second. I think he's an awful, turn-over machine. I don't think he's going to make much of a difference at all right now, or down the road, and he's a salary anchor for the next 5 years.
And all this leadership MSM is talking about; what leadership!? what did his leadership accomplish in T.O.? Where is any evidence of any leadership? He was a complete failure as a leader in stinktown.
Its not all bad in that we didn't give up any current players ( 9mm, i know, but he's hurt so often, its like he was not really a player, anyways.Too bad cause I liked him. I feel bad he has to go to that wreck of a team.) Lindberg, we'll have to see, as well as that 2nd rounder. From what I've seen, though, none of the prospects we got are projected to be nhl players. So, all we got is a past his prime pylon, who his peers called the most over-rated player in the league.
Back to the ottawa MSM blowing sunshine up our asses over this. This smells so much like a Ottawa Senators PR memo. The radio did nothing but tell us how good phagoof will be when they never had anything good to say about him before, including dean brown, who has always been rough on dion. I totally believe the sens got all the media onboard for this, knowing it would not be a popular move with fans. I'm sure they directed everyone to sell this to the fans. TSN 1200 read nothing but good emails and only took positive callers all day. that was a turd polishing of epic proportions today.
Is part of my venom because he's phagoof of the laffs? you bet. I can't let that. but he's also a bad player with an awful contract. he will not fix this team.
Got word from upstairs. Had to redact the negative comments.
I'm going to be real interested in seeing what they are going to do with Cowen. Do they just buy him out and get rid of him, or do they think they can do something with him. If there is any coach in the league that might be able to get Cowen turned around it's Bab****. And if he pulls any of that who gives a crap business with Bab****, he'll be gone so fast his agent won't know where to find him.
Also got a kick out of a couple of media types who suggested 9MM might be able to be slotted into the line up as 3rd or 4th line guy. When healthy, he's better than all but a couple of their players.
Saw a quote tonight from Bab**** saying that he thinks there's a physical problem with Cowen, and he's going to have their "top medical scientists" look at him.

" we found the problem, mike. He has no brain. It's actually just those hot dogs you see in convenience stores, that spin around on those spikes. That's literally what's in his head. "

Are these the same guys as melnyk's forensic staff?

james Gordon had a great comparable; Wade Redden. A once-good player who can no longer keep up, who's skills are eroding and they won't get any better. except, we are the rangers in this circumstance.
at least Darren Dreger said today on a podcast somewhere up in Canada that he thought Phaneuf would fit in great as a 2nd pairing with Ceci. Russell don't u believe in Dreger or was it McKenzie?
This time, I believe they are dillusional. ceci will be the one to have to carry his ass.

I guess Phaneuf is probably an upgrade over Cowen. But 7 million is a lot of for a number 4 or 5 guy. And I would be a lot more comfortable if his contract was for 3 years and not 5. However I guess when you subtract 9mm, Cowen and Greening's salaries, it's not a big jump in cost over the first year or two. Just hope that a couple of years down the road, his contract doesn't mean that we can't sign some of our younger guys who's contracts will be coming for renewal.
it's the Senators, they ain't paying him 7M a year for 5 years. His contract is if I'm not mis-remembering 6.5 for the next 2 years in real money, then 6 then 5 then 3M in real money. You know the kinda money all of us make everyday. AO I know yours is different but this is what Bob McKenzie or was it Darren Dreger said today on Vancouver radio or was it Ottawa radio?!?!? Trust Me!!
