We generally only use salt for icy conditions. 

I've put down a thiin layer before freezing rain starts. It keeps the ice from adhearing to the pavement and scrapes up easily.

For snow, we just let it fall and shovel.

 That's what I thought, shovel snow *then* salt. (All our snow melts and turns to ice.) Complex maintenance staff seems…confused about things. Two days of bone-dry wind, there's not a drop of moisture to be found. Snow expected tomorrow morning, not overnight, and they spent two hours dumping salt everywhere.
