I thought about what you both said TJ and Homer and I went looking for sites (as I'm not a statistician) that analyzed hockey stats and I found this site: http://hockeyanalytics.com/2008/01/the-ten-laws-of-hockey-analytics/ (sorry it's not linked I'm on my phone)
It has some interesting takes on the numbers... statistically a team with a good goal diff. Just had a higher tendency to make the playoffs (which seems self evident, but as the Leafs could still bomb out makes more sense).

True about EN goals. it's also a stat that can be looked at in many ways.
Back when the Sens dominated the league, they had a bad 1 goal game record. Some took this as the Sens can't win close games.
Another way to look at is that no team can go 82-0 and that season, the best a team could do against Ottawa at time was to beat them by one goal. Other than that, more often than not, the Sens won by 2 or more goals and a few 1 goal games.
Unfortunately that team had a bad pucker factor especially in the playoffs--and as described above in close games

another interesting thing: there is a scenario where the sens could be in a position to eliminate the leafs....by losing to the isles on the last day. Now, i'm not suggesting they throw that game....oh, wait, damn straight I am!

That's good news for the Sens. They don't burn a year of entry level and it gets him into some 8-9 games with Bingo. They should be able to give him lots of ice time, which he would not have gotten down the stretch in Ottawa.
